Google/Yahoo Merger?!?

Delta - Tech.co.nr,

Is this true? Could it be? Has it finally happened? Perhaps… What would happen if Flickr (Yahoo Owned) and YouTube (Google Owned) were to merge into one, separate website? One online media website to rule them all. Dun-dun-dah! Nope… Not Lord Of The Rings! Read on… This is big stuff!

Well, Pixilis, the photo/video sharing application is about to find out what happens when you mix a bit of this and that. Technically, it’s not actually merging the two services (YouTube and Flickr), but what it is doing is providing excellent alternatives to them both. To tell the truth, I actually prefer Pixilis to both YouTube and Flickr, mainly because it has all of my media in a single, easy to find place.

Pixilis, unlike YouTube and Flickr has a credits system. Although I’m still quite unclear about how it works (along with the rest of the world), you’ll have the option to sell videos for viewing for credits, and even license out the video, again, for credits. With credits, you can buy new layouts, watch new films, see great photos and do all manner of cool, spunky things.

The only problem. To make this market work, obviously, everyone would start off with a certain amount of credits when they start the site, but then you face the problem of cheats. People creating multiple accounts in order to gain more credits unfairly. How to stop them? Do you track IPs, e-mail addresses and private data? That would make sense, but then this great service would lose so many potential users over security fears. That said almost every website under the sun collects some kind of information about you, with or without your consent.

Or instead of accounts starting with credits, will you have to buy them? That would make an interesting twist to the website, currently in private beta. No date on its launch, but expect it to be happening within the next few months, possibly weeks. Stay tuned, I’ll let you know when it does.

Other notable features? Well, the more friends you invite, the higher rating an acccount you’ll get. After inviting your first 25 friends, you’ll get a free upgrade to a pro account! I won’t go into details about this, but it’s a fairly simple strategy of getting more users to any new start-up.
