All New Meebo Released!

Meebo, everyone’s favorite Web 2.0 Instant Messaging client just got better this week. For those not familiar with this lovely service, Meebo is a free Web based instant messaging client that combines the most popular IM services (eg. Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, GTalk etc), making them all accessible from a single location.
The most visible upgrades center around design. The whole site looks more polished and more inviting than ever before. Going beyond that Meebo now has:
- the ability to move buddies between groups by simply dragging and dropping them
- the ability to pop up conversations into a complete browser window
- an individual sign on and off where now you can manage your screen names one-by-one
- better optimization to go faster, and feels more robust than ever
Although Meebo is still in its Alpha stage, in my view, it’s already by far the best web based IM client out there.
So many web-based IM’s…
The main one’s I use are eBuddy and Meebo. Both are nice, each different in there own way. The eBuddy (www.ebuddy.com) IM client has a really nice interface. Meebo (www.meebo.com) however supports more IM clients.
It seems like every week, a new webbased IM client pops up. Plenty of competition, so whats the next step of IM? And who’s going to survive or die?
I read that some web based IM’s have expanded to other channels, for example, eBuddy is also available for mobile phones and mobile devices (PSP/Nintendo DS). This literally takes IM everywhere.
Is this going to be threat for SMS/Text messaging?
How much your carrier will allow this is another story.
If it eats into their revenue, I cannot see them allowing a lot of phones to have this capability built in.
True, but the European Cell Phone Network is more advanced than that of the US. More people in Europe chat via their cell phones, whereas in the US, due to high costs, cellphone types and insufficient network structure, IM via the cell phone isn’t as popular. But the bottom line is, this could be the next trend, and not simply a hype.
The cell phone carriers, will have to think twice about the advantages and disadvantages of IM over their networks. They could just charge a monthly, nominal fee, for the data sent over from IM…
