Facebook Rumored To Launch Music Site Soon

Paul Glazowski,

Smell that? That’s a rumor. One involving Facebook and a supposed music service the company will announce later this month. What do you think? Plausible? Or unlikely?

There may a few grains of truth in what some forecasters are predicting. If you look at what MySpace has done to organize a music site of its own, it makes absolute sense for Facebook to desire something of the same vein for itself. Facebook lacks a place of its own to send members to browse popular new tracks and view new music videos, and would do well to erect one soon to remain “in the game”, so to speak.

Sure, Facebook has one up on MySpace in terms of aesthetics and the winds of the social networking world have been blowing its way for some time, but as more of its members realize that the feature set of the site doesn’t quite measure up to others elsewhere on the Web, it will start to see an exodus - though presumably pretty limited in size – from its servers similar to what MySpace experienced a number of months ago.

There’s no telling whether Facebook Music will see the light of day. Mashable’s Kristen Nicole has said that the site “is supposedly lining up several partners from the music industry for their music service,” but doesn’t go so far as to offer any solid leads apart from the rumored release date: May 21st. Thus, the information we’ve got is at best pretty sketchy.

We typically see leaks make their way into the blogosphere several days before “the big day,” so if we’re to learn anything about “Facebook Music” we’ll do so the week (or even the weekend) before the release. We’d like to tell you more now, but as this is a kind of rumor which carries little depth, we simply can’t speak any further on the topic right now. Sure we could unload a whole lot of nonsense and speculative speculation on you, but doing so would be doing a disservice, and we’re nothing if not honorable. No? We’re not? Ah, well, regardless, end of post.
