Social bookmarking has only come to be utilized to a large degree in recent years. The first service to really popularize the practice is often thought to be Del.icio.us. Regardless of which came first, who copied whom, and what really constitutes a social bookmarking service, it’s occasionally a topic of interest what site stands where on the list of the largest. For those who wish to know, eBizMBA has laid out a tally of the top 20.
It probably comes as no surprise that Digg, a site whose power is in the hands of its users (though how many exactly wield the whip with the biggest handle is surely subject to question), stands atop all others. The company seems to double its user base every twelve months, after all. When reading, however, the figures logged by the two bearers of the list’s data, you can’t help but notice very different totals recorded by Compete and Quantcast. Compete states that Digg was most recently known to attract 11,344,960 unique monthly visitors, while Quantcast measured the site at 6,300,000. Just north of half Compete’s tally. Understandably, to sort both data sets reasonably for the creation of the list, eBizMBA simply takes the mean total for each of the top 20. On to the others.
Number two might be a shocker: Netscape. Yep, Netscape. The site averages 7,145,007 unique monthly visitors. Technorati claims bronze with 3,132,819 UMVs.
4th through 20th are as follows:
