ProfileMine: AJAX Editor For MySpace Pages
by
on May 28, 2007,
MySpace surely is not very aesthetically pleasing. It?s downright abysmal, to be honest. But it?s home to tends of millions of social networkers and for some reason or another, they?re okay with how things are. I can?t quite grasp the indifference among the loyalists about the site?s theme, but perhaps some things simply aren?t meant to be understood. They just are the way they are.
One thing I assume must be the case, though, is that some of the folks that consider themselves part of the MySpace community would like to edit their pages without sparking a migraine into full force. An ultra-simple all-in-one utility would probably be a nice thing to have to save them from such misery. Maybe one that?s been laced with a fair amount of AJAX? Totally.
You may be surprised to find that such an item exists. Yes, you can indeed formulate your space with the modern miracle that is drag-and-drop and edit the variety of personal-but-public information you wish to post without having to use the primitively assembled tools on MySpace itself. The friendlier, more polished editing space: ProfileMine.
No HTML proficiency needed. No more page loads followed additional page loads to get your page where you want/need it to be. Only your mouse/trackpad, and at least marginally dexterous fingers (to offset the gibberish with intelligible words) are required.
There?s a problem with this product, however. A big problem. See, if you?d like to play with ProfileMine within Firefox, you cannot. Not without the IETab add-on, at least, which really defeats the purpose of Firefox altogether, does it not? No, you?ll have to use IE, which includes the ?MSHTML engine?, a standard of Microsoft?s of a similarly proprietary nature to the devilish invention that is ActiveX, only one a touch less hostile to the future of the cross-compatibility ? something each and every software maker should work to promote and perfect tirelessly so we can finally put our frustration over the matter to rest.
If you happen to use IE and like IE, however, go ahead and enjoy ProfileMine. And, if you happen to like it, send its creators a nice fruit basket (tangible or virtual, whichever?s easiest for you), which a nice terse note asking them to drop the MSHTML engine requirement and open the heck up, we?d greatly appreciate it.
Note: We?re not sure how much relevance this little memo has to the piece published above, but just as a friendly warning, you may not be able to edit your MySpace page(s) with ProfileMine in a swanky Apple store stuffed to the brim with WiFi hotspots and Internet terminals (a.k.a., Apple computers). Apple decided recently to put an end to MySpace access in its stores, starting with its Fifth Avenue shop.
