Digg To Unveil New Images Feature In Coming Weeks

Paul Glazowski,

digglogoIt’s been a long-requested addition that has so far been absent Digg’s feature list. Fortunately, in a few weeks’ time, the wait will be no more.

The debut of an Images-specific category on Digg is to occur “in a week or two,” according to Michael Arrington of TechCrunch. (How’s he know? K. Rose told him.) It was first promised by the San Francisco-based company back in August of this year, and after a good three months, it’s about ready for release.

Some might ask: Why is Digg Images such an anticipated asset-to-be? Well, quite simply, it’s desperately needed.

While the social news site started as a place to share links to all sorts of things to do with technology and new Web developments – plus some strange and quirky bits thrown in for good measure – it’s grown to become a monster of a venue for all sorts of information: news (not only tech-related, but business, science, sports, etc., too), videos, and, yes, photos.

In the distant past (about a year or two ago) it was a gamble as to whether or not the page at the other end of the link would be filled with pixels in the shape of text or a photograph (or several). But recently, Digg’s user base have proceeded to promote photos to front-page prominence so often that it’s now necessary for members to affix a ‘[Pic(s)]’ label to titles as a convenient tip to readers.

So it’s only fitting that photos get their own category, the presence of which will help make it much easier for visitors to view what they want to view. With the site growing at the rate it is, and with increased attention being paid to media online, it makes perfect sense to include such media-specific features. First came an avenue for video; soon we’ll see a place reserve for photos alone.

Gotta love evolution.

  • I can’t tell you how many articles I’ve read over this past year in regards to Digg adding a photo feature. It seems like they keep putting it off.

  • If you read in the comments on TC you would have seen one linking to a TechSite that talked about this in the beginning of October and included screenshots: Is Digg testing out their new image section?.

It always amazes me how it’s not “news” until Arrington talks about it.

  • Isn’t that the truth Steve.

  • HMTKSteve,

Sure, it’s news, it’s just not well-known news.

Thanks for the comment. Hope to see more from you in the future.

    Jeff,

Though everything Kevin Rose says about Digg and the other properties he’s involved with is certainly promotional - and he offers up quite a bit of prelim hype too, as does everyone - I understand why it’s taken this long.

As Mr Rose has said himself, Digg is big, so anything they work on at HQ has to withstand the onslaught of many, many users right off the bat. Making it “rock-solid” (or as rock-solid as possible) requires extra good development, and that extra good development takes extra long.

So, even though I’m certain Digg has been working on a photo feature for many months, it’s most likely been necessary to spend so much time with it before announcing a release.
