Everybody Wants to Be Hippie 2.0: BBC Goes Green

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira,

BBC Green logo imageOn Tuesday, the BBC launched their own green initiative, a site that “gives simple and practical advice on living a greener life that will make a difference to both the environment and your wallet.”

The site, called BBC Green, will provide articles and content that give users practical advise for achieving a more sustainable lifestyle. The content is geared toward regular people who may not have a very good understanding of what a sustainable lifestyle is, much less how to achieve it, and covers everyday issues in home and garden, foor, travel, lifestyle and family, and finances. From defining climate change to ethical investments, BBC Green hopes to cover any question users might have.

Beyond just content, however, BBC Green adds a personalized area of the site. Once you register, you can save content to your profile, allowing you to refer to particular areas of interest. You can also email articles to others, as well as add the content as a social bookmark on sites like Delicious, Facebook, and Digg. An additional feature provides customizable tips for changing your lifestyle. You can choose from three different levels for your “Action Plan,” from small changes that can make a difference to a total lifestyle overhaul. Each choice shows you how much impact the individual change will make in both CO2 emissions and cost (done in British pounds), and you can alter the plan to fit your lifestyle.

BBC Green has an ad-supported model, and has also announced a partnership with eBay, who seem to be all over green initiatives lately . The eBay ads will encourage users to buy only used goods from the site as “an everyday way to recycle and reduce unnecessary waste and the embedded energy of buying new products.”

While the content on BBC Green is still a bit sparse, the sudden proliferation of green initiatives by some big online companies is certainly a welcome one. The Action Plan application is still listed as beta, and I'd love to see it able to convert the financials into other currencies for more worldwide use.
