p0pulist: Social Lists and More

Leslie Poston,

p0pulist logoWhen I first saw the notification that P0pulist, a Particles / Massively Small Product application, went live, I thought I would be reviewing another Spokeo or similar application made for stalking keeping up with your friends online. It is a bit like Spokeo, Plaxo and other tracking applications in that it follows what your friends are doing online, but it also offers a few more features that I liked quite a bit.

It uses the Plaxo API engine to import your friends, so people who have used Plaxo will be familiar with the import function and how it works. Since I had signed up for Plaxo when we reviewed it for Profy, I was disappointed that you couldn't just use your existing Plaxo or Spokeo friends to start your P0pulist Crowd list, instead of having to go through and accept or deny each person all over again as the list imported.

That was the only thing that was a disappointment, however. P0pulist is simple, sleek and lovely to look at. It looks like I wish FriendFeed did, and it offers list features FriendFeed lacks. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer the full conversation following that FriendFeed does, or I would be using it in place of FriendFeed right now. Hear that, P0pulist? If you add in the conversation tracking and RSS style functionality of Twitter and the like that FriendFeed has, you will earn my complete loyalty.

P0pulist offers a way for you to track your interests and activities online, and the interests and activities of your friends. It gives you a place to comment on what you and your friends are interested in. It doesn't yet pull in comments from other places, like the URLs of the items on your lists, but I'm guessing it will at some point - that would only make sense.

As you add interests and things to follow into various categories, P0pulist populates your personal lists and sorts them by date and interest. Each item on the list can be linked to, have a picture uploaded and written about. This gives people following your interests a way to learn more about what you like. P0pulist also gives you a way to look back on past interests with the date sorting feature. Handy for seeing how your interests have grown or changed.

P0pulist works on the iPhone with its sleek design to match the sleek gadget. It also integrates with FaceBook (not that you need to add any more notifications to your FaceBook profile, but if you want to, it works flawlessly). Other features include a way to add friends of your friends to your list or just observe the interests of others not on your list. With email posting capabilities in addition to the web posting, this site could become the next big thing - all it needs a bit more integration with existing sites.
